Vegetable Sadism

This book delves into the subject of one of the most disturbed personality types known to man: The vegetarian...

Vegetarian personality disorder involves mistrust specifically related to the content of the dinner plate. “Individual thinks that there are pieces of dead animals on his plate…. In advanced stages of the disorder, the individual suspects that there are minuscule animal by-products mixed with his food."
The book finds that vegetarians exhibit "schizoid-like inability to empathise with certain living organisms (usually vegetables)" and "Paranoid and hyper-vigilant preoccupation with the oral zone..."  The hunter who kills animals for meat gives the pursued animal a chance to escape. How more sadistically cruel is the non-meat eater? What is the likelihood that the tranquil carrot can successfully outrun its vicious vegan predator?

Cooking Kraken

The Beatles obviously hungry and had food on their mind when they recorded Come Together, the opening track on their Abbey Road album.

If you listen closely you will realise its a proposal to use a giant squid to feed a legion of aged bingo players.

John Lennon sings:

"He one spine o' Kraken
  He got wonky bingo"

and
"One thing I can tell you is you got to eat cheese
  Come together over meat"

Calamari rings the size of car tyres!

Undead Mary

The Virgin Mary in Mexico appears as the undead goddess of death.

Santa Muerta (Saint Death) goes by many names: Senora Blanca (the White Lady), Senora Negra (Black Lady), La Huesuda (The Boney Lady), Senora de las Sombras (Lady of the Shadows), Nina Santa (Holy Girl) and La Flaca (The Skinny One). Santisima Muerta is a similar version used on many candles.  But I'm going to call her Undead Mary.  Many modern images of Santa Muerta are often cheap mass-produced depictions of the grim reaper, however, the more traditional images portray the feminine aspect of the character and resembles a skeletal version of the Virgin Mary.

A significant link that can be made to Mesoamerican Aztec beliefs and the goddess Mictecacíhuatl, Lady of the Land of the Dead, and queen of the underworld. The use of skeletons and death rituals have been a been part of the culture in the Americas since Pre-Colombian times. Bones of saints are also a part of Christian practices around the world.

Shrines to Santa Muerta usually feature a skeleton dressed up as royalty with sceptres and crowns, seated on a throne to symbolise the triumph of death. The skeleton was used to remind Catholics of the need for a "good death" (muerte santa), fully confessed of sins.  Offerings at Santa Muerta shrines are made in many different ways. These include burning candles, adorning the statues with flowers, leaving money, smoking cigars and blowing the smoke at the shrine, and drinking liquor.  Sounds like a fun mass.  Many followers tattoo themselves with images of Santa Muerta. Followers believe that by paying respect to death that you will be spared for more time which is why Undead Mary is popular with criminals and people who work risky jobs such as late night taxi drivers.

Confusingly the Roman Catholic Church does not officially accept Undead Mary, but the same “Saint of Death” is found in The Church of St Peter’s Chains (the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli), a Roman Catholic Church in Rome.  “Santa Muerte” is watching over a dead Roman Catholic Bishop enshrined at St Peter’s Chains and has been officially blessed and recognised.  Probably because the church views Mexicans as high speed cheese thieves.

Vegitable Slaughterer

Some would say vegetarian is an old Native American word meaning lousy hunter.  Disappointingly, that's not in fact true.  A vegetarian is someone who slaughters and kills fruits, and vegetables for the enjoyment of eating them.  Most people believe the word is derived from the word vegetable but in fact the word was coined by the founders of the British Vegetarian Society in 1842 and comes from the Latin word vegetus, meaning fresh or lively.  The word implies a mentally and physically vigorous person and a balanced lifestyle, not just a lack of meat.

The earliest records of vegetarianism come from ancient India and ancient Greece in the 6th century BC. The diet was closely connected with the idea of non-violence towards animals and was promoted by religious groups and philosophers.  Later vegetarianism fell out of fashion in Europe although in the middle ages  Several orders of European monks practised it for ascetic reasons, but none of them eschewed fish.  The medieval definition of "fish" included all water living animals such as: seals, porpoises, dolphins, barnacle geese, puffins, and beavers.  Yes, medieval vegetarians feasted on the flesh of dolphins and cuddly seals.

The word vegan was originally derived from the first three and last two letters of the word vegetarian in 1944 when people, frustrated at the inclusion of dairy in vegetarian diets, formed the UK Vegan Society.  A popular tattoo for vegans appears to be the word "VEGAN" inside their lower lip.  Ironically the vast majority of tattoo ink brands use animal glycerins.  Also one of the most commonly used ink pigments is derived from animal bones.
...and there they put it, inside their mouths.

Creepy Sparkles

Read a good quote the other day:

“Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.”
- Stephen King

I like vampire books and movies which iswhy I havn't read or seen any Twilight books or movies.  From what I've heard Edward Cullen is a 112 year old man who is still in high school.

Ace Music Julie

OK. I've decided to do a new regular Sound of Music post each month.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Justin Bieber looks like Julie Andrews...?
